So we are now into March and yes…I’ve finally started writing (deep breath). ET THESIS DUE APRIL 1st. ok, don’t wanna think about that…but really its totally a race against the clock at this point in time.

Picking up steam over the last week which has been nice. My thesis has changed quite a bit from what I originally envisioned. Right now I’m working on finishing chapter 2 entitled
OUR STRUGGLES ARE OUR ARE STRENGTHS: WOMEN OF COLOR IN ANTI-RACIST MOVEMENTS
using books like:
Separate Roads to Feminism (Roth)
Black Sexual Politics and Black Feminist Thought (Patricia Hill Collins)
Words of Fire (Guy-Seftall)
—-any suggestions on books, anthologies, collections on Chicana, Puerto Rican, Asian American women or others in national liberation struggles?

Here’s what I’m arguing in this chapter///

In order to better understand the contemporary ways in which women of color form alliances with other women of color in the fight for social justice, I will explore the emergence of Black feminism in the post-Civil Rights era. I will look at the process they made in creating their own spaces to fight racism and sexism simultaneously in black liberation struggles. From this, other women of color reacted similarly within their own respective national liberation movements. They organized with other women in their racial and ethnic communities, as well as collectively with other women of color to fight against patriarchy, male dominance, and sexism. Next, I will segway into the critical importance of women of color writings and theorizing focusing particularly on the work of A Bridge Called My Back. Lastly, I look at the various ways women of color are organizing today through organizations, coalitions, and alliances using a powerful feminist and anti-racist lens.

Quck thesis update

School has started off mad hectic!
but I think classes have settled in and I think I picked a pretty good selection: Seminar on Latino Politics, Art and Civic Engagement: Creativity and Reality, ET Senior Seminar and THESIS. sounds like a lot of reading, but from the looks of the syllabus ish looks pretty manageable! here’s to (hopefully) the last semester at Brown..if credits are looking right.

The Bay Area was AMAZING. I was very productive back at home in Seattle and especially in the bay where I conduct several interviews, read, and even started writing =)

This Friday I’m Skype interviewing Anisha Desai, the Executive Director of the Women of Color Resource Center in the Bay (unfortunately that interview didn’t happen in person cause Anisha was mad busy–you know, the life of an ED).

Right now, I’ve written the introduction and some of the methodology. I’m trying to write as I research and interview. It’s been an interesting process but has been a great way for me to work.

I have lots of ideas, thoughts on new media that I’ll hopefully post in the next few days but for the time being that’s where I’m at.

Travel tales from the bay

This trip in the bay is much more intense then I ever could imagine. Besides my thesis work (which is definitely the reason I came down here), I’ve been inspired and moved by the organizing for justice around Palestine and Oscar Grant.

I went to the Oscar Grant rally down at Oakland city hall. From the rally this afternoon, I’ve come away with a deep sense of community power and individual and collective healing. Mayor Ron Dellums, rapper Too Short, and a number of young people and folks from the Oakland community spoke up and out about community action and demands. From Oakland to Palestine–we are on the people’s side
